Subclass 601 Visa

The Australian ETA (also known as the Subclass 601 Visa) is a temporary electronic permit, allowing eligible and approved passport holders to travel to Australia for tourism purposes.

Other types of tourist visas include:

  • Subclass 651 - E Visitor Visa: This visa enables eligible passport holders to stay in Australia as often as they wish in 12 months. 
  • Subclass 600 - Tourist Visa: This visa stream allows you to bring family and friends to Australia or undertake business activities for a specified period.

To be eligible for an Subclass 651 - ETA visa, you must: 

  • Be a genuine visitor in Australia
  • Have an eligible passport
  • Meet the health and character requirement

Steps to Obtain a Electronic Travel Authority

Getting the ETA (subclass 601) is a three-stage process which goes as follows:

STEP 1: Consult with our Agents to determine your eligibility for a Subclass 601 visa. 

To begin your application, our Registered Migration Agents will assess your eligibility for the visa, and advise you of possible visa pathways to visit Australia temporarily. 

STEP 2: Gather your Documents 

Once our agents deem you eligible for a 601 visa, they will provide you with a custom checklist for a tourist visa to support your application.

STEP 3: Wait for Visa Grant

Once the necessary application and documents are finalised, our Agents will apply for your visa. We may advise you to undertake health or police checks, if it is required for your application.

    Can I work on a Tourist Visa?

    Tourist visa does not have any work rights. However, you may be able to apply for work rights once you have applied for a tourist visa. 

    Can I extend my Tourist Visa?

    You cannot extend a Subclass 601.

    Can I travel to Australia without a travel ban?

    Yes, you can travel to Australia without an approved travel ban exemption.

    Processing Time is currently not available for this visa. Usually ETA’s are processed fairly quickly, within 2 weeks of application. 

    Electronic Travel Authority during COVID-19


    From 21 February 2022, double vaccinated travellers holding a valid visa can travel to Australia without a travel exemption. Unvaccinated visa holders will still need to be in an exempt category or hold an individual travel exemption to enter Australia.


    From 6 April 2022, all ETA eligible passport holders can apply for the visa using the ETA app.

    ​At this time, ETA lodgement is only available through the Australian ETA app. You cannot apply for an ETA online, or through an agent or airlin​e at this time, unless the application is lodged via the ETA app.​
